Trailhead address: Newton Canyon Parking Lot Kanan Dume Rd, Malibu, CA 90265
To get to the trailhead: The trailhead starts on Kanan Dume road, which is also where the Backbone Trail meets. Park in the designated (free) parking area at Newton Canyon Parking Lot. (The parking lot is near Rosenthal-The Malibu Estate).
From Hwy 1 turn right onto Kanan Dume Road and follow it for a little over 4 miles and trailhead parking will be on the left side of the road.
From 101 freeway, exit Kanan Dume Road and follow this road for roughly 8 or 9 miles south past two tunnels and the trailhead parking for the Backbone Trail will be on the right just before the third tunnel.
